Training and Research Visa (Subclass 402)

The subclass 402 visa is a training and research visa allows people to be sponsored to come to Australia for training, development or research purposes on a temporary basis.

This visa has three stream:

  1. Occupational trainee stream;
  2. Professional Development Stream;
  3. Research stream.
  • The Occupational Trainee stream is for people who need structured, workplace-based training to enhance their skills in their current occupation, area of study, or field of expertise
  • The Research stream is for academics looking to take part in or observe an Australian research project in an Australian university, in partnership with academics employed by the institution
  • The Professional Development stream is designed for professionals, managers or government officials looking to enhance their managerial or professional skills by participating in a professional development programme.

There are three stages involved in subclass 402 visa:

  1. Sponsorship;
  2. Nomination (there is no nomination application required for the Research stream) and
  3. Visa Application

Businesses interested in making use of the 402 (Occupational Trainee) visa programme must first apply for, and be approved, as a Training and Research sponsor. Organisations may be eligible to become a sponsor if they’re:

  • An Australian organisation, lawfully operating in Australia,
  • A foreign Government agency, or;
  • An Australian Government agency intending to engage in occupational training, or a tertiary or research institution

Organisations must also have a good business record, abide by Australian laws and have the capacity to comply with their sponsorship obligations.
